Social media and scrolling: get your attention back
You pick up your phone to check one thing and look up 40 minutes later. That isn’t a lack of willpower. Feeds, notifications and endless scroll are built to hold your attention, and over time reaching for the phone becomes automatic.
Signs scrolling is running the show
- Your phone is the first thing you look at in the morning and the last at night
- You open apps without deciding to
- You often feel worse, not better, after a long scroll
- You check your phone in the middle of conversations
- You feel uneasy when your phone isn’t with you
How hypnotherapy helps

The reach for the phone is a habit loop: a cue such as boredom or a spare moment, the scroll, then a small reward. In hypnosis we work on that loop and on what the scrolling is helping you avoid, so the urge loses its grip and you choose when to pick the phone up.
Simple changes help too, and they work well alongside sessions: turn off most notifications, keep the phone out of the bedroom and use your phone’s own screen time limits. Hypnotherapy makes those changes easier to stick to. It doesn’t make them for you.
If it’s more than a habit
If scrolling is tied up with low mood or anxiety that’s hard to shift, talk to your GP. In England you can also refer yourself to NHS Talking Therapies for free.
Common questions
Do I have to quit social media?
No. Most people want to use it on their own terms rather than give it up. We agree your goal together.
How many sessions will I need?
Many people notice a difference after one session. Three sessions gives us room if the habit is tied to stress or loneliness.
How do sessions work?
We meet one to one over Zoom, and you get a recording of the hypnosis to listen to between sessions. Ideally somewhere your phone isn’t.
